These critical thinking exercises for adults with answers are designed as practical reasoning tasks, not as a list of habits to admire. Each exercise asks you to examine a realistic situation, reach a conclusion and then compare your reasoning with a worked answer.

The purpose is to practice separating facts from assumptions, judging whether evidence supports a claim and noticing what information is still missing. The answers do not reward suspicion for its own sake. They show how to form a conclusion that is proportional to the available evidence.

These seven exercises have not been tested together as a formal training program. However, a 2015 meta-analysis of 341 critical-thinking instruction effects found that critical-thinking instruction can be effective and identified authentic or situated problems and examples among the approaches associated with positive results. The exercises below use that practical format without claiming that one article can guarantee an improvement.

Try to answer each task before reading its worked answer. Writing down the reason for your conclusion can make unsupported assumptions and missing information easier to notice.

All situations and numerical examples below are fictional and were created solely for reasoning practice.

Exercise 1: Which Statements Are Facts, Inferences or Unknowns?

Meera emails a sales report to her manager at 4:58 p.m. On the following morning, the manager replies, “Please come to my office at 10. We need to discuss the numbers.” Meera immediately concludes that the report contains serious mistakes and that her manager is angry.

Classify each statement as a fact, an inference or something that remains unknown:

  1. Meera sent the report at 4:58 p.m.
  2. The manager wants to discuss the numbers.
  3. The report contains serious mistakes.
  4. The manager is angry with Meera.
  5. The meeting will result in criticism.

Worked answer

Statements 1 and 2 are facts within the scenario. The time appears in the description, and the manager explicitly requested a discussion about the numbers.

Statements 3 and 4 are inferences. They are possible interpretations but the message does not establish either one. The manager might have found a mistake, want clarification, need a forecast or wish to use the numbers in another presentation.

Statement 5 is an uncertain prediction. The meeting has not happened and the available message does not establish its outcome.

The exercise does not require you to assume that nothing is wrong. A careful conclusion would be: “The manager wants to discuss the report but I do not yet know the reason or outcome.” When an ambiguous message triggers a strong interpretation, separate what you directly observed from the meaning your mind added.

Exercise 2: Does the Evidence Support the Claim?

A fictional productivity application advertises the following result:

“Eighty-two percent of users felt more organized after only one week, proving that the application increases workplace productivity.”

The company explains that it emailed a survey to people who had used the application every day for seven days. Respondents rated whether they felt more organized. The company did not measure completed work, compare the users with a control group or report how many people ignored the survey.

Before reading the answer, identify what the survey measured and decide whether it proves the advertised claim.

Worked answer

The survey provides evidence about how responding users described their sense of organization. It does not directly measure workplace productivity.

Several gaps prevent the evidence from proving the larger claim:

  • Feeling organized and producing more or better work are different outcomes.
  • Only people who used the application daily were invited, so occasional users and people who stopped using it were excluded.
  • The response rate is unknown, which means satisfied users may have been more willing to answer.
  • Without a comparison group, the survey cannot show what would have happened without the application.
  • One week does not establish whether any change continued.

The evidence also does not prove that the application is ineffective. A precise conclusion would be: “Among the people who completed the week and answered the survey, 82 percent reported feeling more organized. This result alone does not demonstrate increased productivity.” Large percentages should not distract from a mismatch between what was measured and what was advertised.

Exercise 3: Can You Generate Alternative Explanations?

An online store launches a redesigned website on Monday. During the following week, recorded sales fall by 30 percent. The owner concludes that customers dislike the new design and decides to restore the old site immediately.

List at least three other explanations for the recorded decline. Then identify what information would help distinguish among them.

Worked answer

The redesign may have harmed sales, but the timing alone does not prove that it caused the decline. Other plausible explanations include:

  • The analytics or checkout tracking stopped recording some completed orders.
  • A paid advertising campaign ended during the same week.
  • A popular product went out of stock.
  • The payment gateway failed for some customers.
  • Demand normally falls during that week or season.
  • Mobile pages became slower even though the visible design looked acceptable.

The next step is to test explanations rather than choose the most emotionally available one. The owner could compare payment records with analytics, inspect traffic by source, check product availability, test checkout on different devices and compare the same period with earlier weeks. Each explanation predicts different evidence: missing analytics data would create a gap between payment records and recorded conversions, while a payment problem would show customers reaching checkout but failing to complete it. This process prevents one plausible story from being mistaken for the only story.

Exercise 4: What Hidden Assumption Holds the Argument Together?

Consider this argument:

“Many highly successful people wake at 5 a.m. Therefore, waking at 5 a.m. will make a person more successful.”

Identify the assumptions required to move from the observation to the conclusion.

Worked answer

The argument assumes that waking early causes the success being observed. It overlooks several other possibilities.

Successful people may wake early because their work, responsibilities or natural sleep schedule make that practical. Their success could depend on education, opportunity, skill, persistence or other factors unrelated to the clock.

The argument also assumes that the same schedule benefits everyone. It ignores whether early waking merely shifts sleep earlier or reduces the total time available for sleep. Without that information, the schedule comparison remains incomplete.

A more defensible conclusion would be: “Some successful people use an early schedule, but the observation does not show that waking at 5 a.m. causes success or that it suits every person.”

To expose a hidden assumption, place the word “because” between the evidence and the conclusion. Then ask what must be true for that connection to work. In this example, the missing bridge is: “These people became successful because they woke at 5 a.m.” That is precisely the claim the original observation did not establish.

Exercise 5: What Happens When You Check the Denominator?

A company receives 40 customer complaints in January and 60 in February. A report states:

“Complaints increased by 50 percent, showing that customer experience became much worse.”

The company served 1,000 customers in January and 3,000 customers in February. Calculate the complaint rate for each month and reconsider the conclusion.

Worked answer

The complaint count did increase from 40 to 60, which is a 50 percent increase in the raw number.

However, the number of customers also changed:

  • January: 40 complaints among 1,000 customers or 4 percent.
  • February: 60 complaints among 3,000 customers or 2 percent.

The complaint rate fell even though the complaint count rose. The original statement is mathematically correct about the count but misleading when it uses that count alone to claim that the overall customer experience became much worse.

This result does not prove that customer experience improved in every respect because the severity of complaints may have changed and not every dissatisfied customer submits one. It establishes only that complaints became less frequent relative to the number of customers served.

Whenever a headline reports a large increase or decrease, ask “out of how many?” Counts, percentages and rates describe different aspects of the same situation. The relevant denominator may be customers, tests, hours, applications, miles or another measure of exposure.

Exercise 6: Can You Build the Strongest Opposing Argument?

Suppose you believe this statement:

“Remote work increases employee productivity.”

Write the strongest reasonable argument against it without claiming that remote work is always harmful. The goal is to test the original position fairly, not to replace one absolute statement with another.

Worked answer

A strong opposing argument might read:

“Remote work can increase productivity for tasks requiring uninterrupted individual concentration, but the effect is unlikely to be universal. Job type, home environment, access to equipment, communication demands and the way productivity is measured can change the result. Some teams may complete individual tasks faster while experiencing slower coordination, weaker knowledge sharing or more difficult onboarding. A general claim should therefore identify which workers, tasks and outcomes it describes.”

This response challenges the scope and conditions of the claim instead of relying on an insult or stereotype. A more defensible version would be: “Remote work may improve productivity for some roles and tasks when employees have suitable working conditions and teams manage coordination effectively.” If you cannot describe an opposing view in terms that a reasonable supporter would recognize, you probably have not tested your own conclusion thoroughly.

Exercise 7: What Evidence Would Change Your Mind?

Imagine that you strongly believe a new note-taking method improves memory. You have used it for two weeks, enjoy it and feel that you remember more. Several videos repeat the same claim, and each video includes enthusiastic comments.

Write down:

  1. Your present confidence in the claim from 0 to 100.
  2. Evidence that would increase your confidence.
  3. Evidence that would reduce your confidence.
  4. Information you would need before recommending the method to everyone.

Worked answer

Enjoying the method and feeling that it helps are relevant personal observations, but they do not establish how well it works for other people or whether it outperforms another method. The repeated videos may create familiarity without providing independent confirmation. Evidence that could increase confidence would include a clear comparison with another note-taking approach, a meaningful memory test, enough participants to make the result informative and similar findings from independent researchers. It would also matter whether any advantage continued beyond an immediate test.

Confidence should decrease if better-controlled comparisons find no difference, if the reported benefit disappears on delayed tests or if only the method’s creator produces positive results while independent attempts do not.

Before recommending it to everyone, you would need to know who was studied, what material they learned, how memory was measured and whether the method required more time. A result from one type of material may not apply to every subject or learner.

The purpose is not to demand perfect proof before trying a low-risk method. It is to decide in advance what evidence matters instead of accepting supportive information while dismissing every conflicting result.

How Should You Practice These Exercises?

Repeat the reasoning pattern with new situations rather than memorizing the seven worked answers. Remembering that the fictional complaint rate fell is not the same as learning to check denominators elsewhere.

Choose one claim, decision or interpretation from ordinary life and ask:

  • What do I directly know?
  • What have I inferred?
  • Does the evidence measure the claimed outcome?
  • What other explanation could fit the same facts?
  • Which assumption connects the evidence to the conclusion?
  • What is the relevant denominator or comparison?
  • What evidence would make me revise my confidence?

Do not use the questions to delay every decision indefinitely. Use them to reach the best conclusion available while keeping its certainty proportional to the evidence. Instead of saying, “I know why this happened,” you may conclude, “This explanation fits but I need one more check.” That disciplined adjustment is more useful than trying to sound certain about everything.
