How to Kill Weeds Without Killing Grass or Garden Plants

Can Boiling Water Kill Weeds Safely?

It is non-selective. It can injure any leaves or roots it reaches, and established perennial weeds may regrow from underground parts that survive the heat.

Boiling water also creates a serious burn risk during carrying and pouring. It should not be used near children, pets, lawn edges, flower beds, exposed tree roots or slopes where hot runoff could reach desirable vegetation.

Weeds between paving stones often grow in soil, dust and organic debris collected inside the joints.

Start by pulling the plant after rainfall or light watering. Use a narrow paving or crack-weeding tool to loosen remaining roots, then remove accumulated soil and plant debris from the joint.

Repairing damaged joints or gaps can reduce places where new seeds settle and germinate. Hot water may be considered for tiny seedlings only when there is no risk to nearby plants or people.

  • Avoid conditions that could cause spray drift or runoff.
  • Keep the product in its original labelled container.
  • Follow local storage and disposal requirements.

Using more than the labelled amount does not make a treatment safer or more effective. It may damage plants, people, animals or the environment.

After removing the existing weeds, prevent the next outbreak by covering bare soil, applying suitable mulch, maintaining dense grass and removing new seedlings before they produce seeds.
